Reappreciating Søren Kierkegaard's Works of Love is the author's reinterpretation of Kierkegaard's Works of Love in her own voice, shaped by over 30 years of faithfully and fervently living out the commandment to "love your neighbor" in obedience to God's Word. Kierkegaard describes the relationship between God and humanity through the lens of love--love that is, in itself, truth. The author offers a detailed analysis of how human love ( eros ) differs from Christian love ( agape ), and the distinct outcomes each kind of love produces. Specifically, she explores the Christian understanding of relationship as a triangular relationship --"the one who loves - God - the one who is loved"--with God as the intermediary. Through this relationship, she emphasizes both the eternality of love as truth and the solemnity of its command, which sustains that eternality. A life of love--lived through obedience to the commandment, through the voice of conscience, through indebtedness to the gospel, and through the cultivation of truth's virtues--is, as she notes, one that is "nearly impossible to explain to the world, so Kierkegaard encapsulates it with a dash." This metaphor vividly illustrates the perseverance and labor required of those who practice the love of truth. Yet, the love of truth moves toward higher ground, seeking reconciliation by winning back the one it has overcome, and it is brought to completion through a sincere confession and praise--that every glory experienced by the one who loves is the restored image of God, now a vessel for His purpose. The author has lived out the message of the gospel that Kierkegaard identifies as the very essence of Christianity: to truly love oneself is to love God, and to truly love others is to help them love God. By introducing the love of truth that Kierkegaard embodied and recorded--as "a mentor who had walked this path before me [us]"--the author expresses her hope that, in her words: "I hope readers of this book will recognize that walking the path of truth is the greatest journey we can undertake. If they become aware of this, this book will serve as a detailed map highlighting this marvelous way."
