A VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BOOK ON A CRUCIAL SUBJECT.

This is a comprehensive and penetrating book. It serves as a terrific introduction to performance management and it is liberally enriched with case studies. The writing is succinct and clear. Among its many features, the book lays out the five steps to realizing the performance management outcomes you desire: 1) make the business case, 2) establish clear roles and accountabilities for all stakeholders, 3) develop the skills of all participants, 4) align systems and processes, and 5) provide clear measures. The 3 major parts of the book are: I. Why Should You Care About Performance Management II. What Does an Effective Performance Management System Look Like? III. The Power of Realization Included is a model and discussion of linking performance management to other HR systems, specifically: strategic planning; selection and on-boarding; career management; promotion; succession planning; compensation; training; and total quality. It is filled with informative discussions on such topics as best practices and niche toics like forced ranking (Rogers does not like it). As a consultant in this area, I clearly recognize that Rogers knows his subject well and has put a lot of thought into this work...and it shows. Very highly recommended.
