Real Prison Stories - Everybody Got a Story

By Marquis Cole

Everybody inside got a story. Not all of them are true.

They Gave Me 240 Months. My Bunkie Was a Killer. She Answered Until She Didn't. I Found God in the SHU. Tomorrow I'm Free.

Ten men. Ten files. Ten voices from county cells, state yards, and federal compounds across the Midwest - talking about what happens after the door closes.

A 23-year-old does the math on a federal sentence while his lawyer whispers in his ear. A first-time, nonviolent offender is assigned to a cell six feet from a man doing life. A store man builds the most profitable business on the compound and learns that collecting is the dangerous part. A father watches his son turn to somebody off-screen and say Daddy, look. A man who never prayed a day in his life starts talking to God in the SHU because there is nobody else to talk to. And after seventeen years, a man packs his property box for the last time and discovers that leaving scares him more than staying.

Some of these men are sorry. Some are lying to you. One of them is telling the truth about everything except himself.

From the author of the North Side Series comes a new kind of prison book - not why they went in, but what it costs to be there. Raw, funny, violent, intimate, regretful, and real.

Inspired by true accounts. Names changed. Nothing softened.

Real Prison Stories, Volume One. Each story opens with the man's Inmate File.
