Looking beyond the typical tourist locations and activities, RealCity Barcelona is for those who want to sample this showy, flamboyant city like the locals do. Written by resident authors who know the... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I bought this book as a last-minute supplement to the Lonely Planet guide to Barcelona. We just returned from a fantastic trip to Spain, and I must say that I found Real City Barcelona a more useful and upto date book than the LP. In hindsight, am thankful for choosing this guide, especially for restauarant and shopping options. We had bad luck with LP twice in Barcelona - places they recommended had since closed or changed ownership. Real City's choices, on the other hand, were current, varied in merchandise/cuisine and price (the pointers on places that were good value for money were especially handy in an otherwise expensive city), and mostly very popular with the locals. Felt nice to go to places that weren't just tourist traps, and helped us get a real feel for the neighborhood. However, there is one caveat: don't make this your only guidebook to Barcelona. Its list of sights to see isn't comprehensive, and although its maps are good (it's produced by DK, after all, and they do great detailed maps), the maps don't have markers showing the specific location of venues listed in the book - it only provides the address and a reference to a grid square. I think this is important when you're navigating through a new city on your own, and for this Lonely Planet was better. Overall, though, a very useful addition to our trip to Europe. I'm definitely going to use other books in this series.
