A Provocative Read

Today, many citizens of the United States do not view their civic responsibility with importance. This fact is certainly evidenced in the low turnout numbers of voters on Election Day. Voting is a major way that people can have a hand in determining what our culture deems as acceptable, so these statistics should concern us. Even within the ranks of those who do vote, there are some of which it may be said that casting their ballot is the extent of their political involvement. Yet, Tim G. Echols passionately disagrees with the belief that the average American has no effective way, besides voting, to influence the government. His book, Real Citizenship: Practical Steps for Making an Impact on Your Culture is just as invigorating as its title as well as thought provoking. Its rather unusual goal is to involve young citizens in the government process. Mr. Echols has founded Family Resource Network and TeenPact, a ministry that seeks to inform and excite students about government and how they can be involved. In fact, Real Citizenship illustrates the core mission and values of TeenPact. Through stories from his and his colleagues' experiences, Mr. Echols presents the young reader with an exhortation to serve God, grow in His wisdom, and to be prepared to be used by Him for great things. As essential as they are to life, spiritual matters are central to this book's many topics and challenges. All other views held by the author stem from this theme. Within the pages of Real Citizenship, the power of one person with convictions is demonstrated and the need for Godly leaders for our country is emphasized. The topic that impressed me the most was the fact that so much influence can be obtained when you reach out to those in power. Since reading this book for the first time I have found this to be very true through communicating with my legislative delegation. After initial efforts to contact them, I have been remembered as someone who cares and who sees the lawmaking process as important. Overall, God has used this book to help me see the impact that I can make on my society even when I am too young to vote or run for office. Penetrating and clear in the way that things are explained, Real Citizenship was a provocative read and an excellent introduction to civics for "junior statesmen."
