a role independent of the US

As a developed country, living under the shadow of the US, Canada has had various choices of foreign policy. The book is a collection of papers by Canadian intellectuals about what these choices were or could be. One common theme is how, as a "Middle power", Canada can distinguish itself usefully from the US. This plays itself out in ways like encouraging a multilateralist approach to international issues like the environment, or unrest in some nations. One big effort has been to engage with Africa. By directing substantial aid to promote development and health. Another theme is how to manage the relationship with the US. Especially in the so-called War on Terror. But also economically. As in having closer trade and investment relations, in aiding Canada's prosperity.
