Reading With Ease: An Alternative Method is a unique learning to read strategy that is based on decades of literacy research supporting the use of direct one-to-one reading instruction as the key to stimulating the development and improvement of reading skills. As a concerned and deeply engaged parent of a child with moderately severe autism and an intellectual disability, discovering there was a vast gap in the quality of education available for our daughter was challenging. The silver lining to the challenges we faced advocating for education curriculum, instruction, and assessment equality, is this (and future) series of alternative method beginner readers. Creating an alternative reader series was a labor of love. Coalescing decades of literacy research such as pre-teaching vocabulary sight words combined with the processes of teaching phonetics with the use of word symbols, I created a learning strategy that helped our daughter, and others, improve their reading skills. Not only did she learn to read but also she developed a desire to continue her own lifelong learning journey into the wonders of written language. This first of seven learning to read procedural guides open the door to the discovery of written language for people who learn uniquely.
