On another level, the book narrates the tragedy that befalls the entire Sutpen family and that tragedy's legacy that continues well into the twentieth century and beyond. Noel Polk is professor emeritus of English at Mississippi State University and editor of The Mississippi Quarterly. He is the author, most recently, of Faulkner and Welty and the Southern Literary Tradition (University Press of Mississippi).
