Reading Children's Drawings: The Development of Spacial Orientation and Body Schema as Seen in the Person, House, and Tree Motifs

This current study of children's graphic ability has been made in relation to Rudolf Steiner's spiritual scientific observation of the human being. His observation encompasses the physically unseen spiritual dynamics behind form and growth - the archetypal members of the human being. Therefore we need to be conscious that we are seeing deep and sacred processes being shown us by the child. We are observing the result of the work of the spiritual hierarchies in creating a body capable of receiving an independent ego, from the first planetary evolution of Old Saturn to the point where 2000 years ago the archetypal Ego of Humanity could enter - the creation of the cup ready to receive its eternal content.

In looking at basic archetypal forms - for example: the circle, triangle, and square; the whirl, the spiral, and chevron forms, and their manifold variations - we shall need to cultivate accurate and sensitive observations of detail and a living, mobile thinking. These can develop, out of our experience of working with our students, to become a faculty of inner comprehension of the wonder of the spirit working in the human being.
