This is a very good book for a beginner. I read this book when I was 13 and had no previous knowledge about cars, and this book helped me understand almost all aspects of a car. It has lots of illustrations and diagrams, which really helps. The only problem is that this book is now over 20 years old and so it doesn't cover any new technologies. There are many newer books on this topic on the market, but if you can get this one for cheap then I'd recommend it.

This book even though it is outdated holds tons of information that can be applied to the newer cars. Tons of pictures and diagrams making it perfect and simple for the layman to troubleshoot and pinppont most common problems that go wrong with vehicles. One chapter that was most useful was elecetrical problems and how to find open circuits, shorts, taking a wire diagram and simplifying it. I can't say enough good things about this book. JUST FREAKIN GET IT Delta
Great book for anyone.

I grew up around a mechanic father and I myself understand how to do things like changes brakes, oil, tie rods, ball joints and other moderate repairs but I am always looking at beginners books because even the most advanced mechanic can learn something from them. I know that this book is excellent at explaining how an engine works, air fuel mix, and combustion among other things. It may be a little outdated but it can give anyone a general idea on what to look for or even repair their own car. I know that once you read about what you are doing that it is much easier to look at the engine and even start to learn about it. This book also describes maintenence and simple repairs that most people don't believe that they can do or are too afraid to do. I think that it is great for anyone, beginner or advanced, because it has such a clear-cut way of describing things.
Great reference for older models and cars in general

Even though this book was published in the early 80s, it still holds a wealth of useful information and extremely clear and well-drawn illustrations for anyone looking to learn more about cars. The first section of the book details each part of a car system by system (drive train, fuel injection, lubrication) and how each part works, the second part outlines the tools necessary for a complete shop, the third section is over 100 pages of maintanance tips, and the final section details repair for each system. It ends with helpful hints to get your car repaired correctly the first time. All sections have hundreds of accompanying illustrations for each step of the process. This may not be the latest, but it's defintely one of the greatest.
