I am homeschooling and using Harcourt for first grade next year. I ordered the first grade book to go along with my language arts set. I liked it so well, I went back and ordered the kindergarten book. Many of the stories are stories your child will likely have heard before--but I think that's a very good thing. One of the skills that young children have to learn is how to picture a story and imagine it in their heads. The stories and poems in this book are great for helping a child develop that skill, because if children are familiar with the story, they can practice picturing it in their heads. The kindergarten book has a few more pictures and no comprehension questions--it is simply meant to be read and enjoyed. They are fun stories and poems. I love the first one especially! The first grade book introduces the child to reading comprehension questions. And the best part is that they are written in the text for the teacher or for the parent to ask the child. I like the selections included in all of them and I am looking forward to reading this with my daughter this year!
