Sandy Mathers is worried about her son. Ten year old Brent is ill, and he's getting worse fast. He's delusional, he's suffering chills, and his fever is out of control.

They could probably do something for Brent at the hospital--IV drip, antibiotics.something. But first she has to get him there, and that will be tough. Brent has just savaged two EMT's, dodged the police, and run off into the woods, where that thing is waiting for him.

The local police don't believe a word Sandy is saying. The only person who does is a loose cannon detective from New York. And no one is about to follow him into those woods.
