Ravi Shankar (b. 7 April 1920 – d. 11 December 2012)
I have several of his albums; however, I must admit that I have just missed him live in several locations (came really close at Woodstock). So, my only interaction is with his recordings.
I grew up with Ravi Shankar and use them as the measuring stick for all the other performers in this genre. My all-time favorite is his East meets West music, which may horrify Purists, but I find the synthesis intriguing and satisfying. Ravi Shankar was a five-time Grammy Award Winner: Best Chamber Music Performance for West Meets East (with Yehudi Menuhin) in 1967.
This particular recording is very good and shows a good range of performance. At first, I was afraid that his accompaniment would overshadow his music; however, it was just that, an accompaniment that enhanced the performance. The title is “World Peace,” but there is no preaching, simply good music.
