Book Overview

Ranger's Law brings together the fourth, fifth, and sixth of Elmer Kelton's novels on the formative years of the Texas Rangers. Kelton's young heroes, Rusty Shannon, and one-time Comanche captive, Andy Pickard, fight Indians, outlaws, feuding ranchers, smugglers, and all manner of lawbreakers while trying to make lives for themselves in the tumult of post-Civil War Texas.

In Ranger's Trail it is 1874 and retired Texas Ranger Rusty Shannon is urged to rejoin the force to assist in protecting settlers from Indian raids and outlaw bands. After the girl he loves dies, Rusty goes on a vengeance trail, determined to find and kill the man who has ruined his life. But the trail Rusty is following may lead him to an innocent man.

Texas Vendetta takes the young ranger Andy Pickard into the midst of a hate-filled and bloody post-Civil War feud between two Texas families. Pickard, who survived a childhood as a Comanche captive called "Badger Boy," also becomes involved with the young son of an outlaw, a boy who has been "adopted" by the rangers at their San Saba River camp, earning his way as a cook's helper. The boy's father, now released from prison, comes to take his son back, and into a life on the run.

In Jericho's Road, Andy Pickard is assigned to the Texas-Mexico border and finds an ominous notice on the edge of a great tract of ranch land above the Rio Grande: "This is Jericho's Road. Take the Other." The sign signifies Jericho Jackson's land and Jackson is at war with a similarly ruthless cattle baron on the Mexican side of the river, Guadalupe Chavez. The two rustle each others' cattle, raiding and killing on both sides of the border, heading for a bloody showdown -- with the Texas Rangers standing between them.

Three Novels by Kelton

This book is a compilation or collection of three of the "Texas Rangers Series" Ranger's Trail; Texas Vendetta; and Jericho's Road. three good, solid novels featuring Andy Pickard. My advice is to collect these stories separately, if you are into collecting all of Elmer Kelton's novels. The size and the weight of this book is sometimes difficult to handle. And the pages open hard as well and the book is definitely stiff to open, especially when new. That explains the physical side of the book. The content is typical Elmer Kelton. It features characters we may all have met somewhere, sometime in our own lives. But being Texans they have that extra swagger--being bold, determined, and civic minded when the need arises. So, from that stand point I give this a rating of 4 out of 5. If the price is right, but it."

Rangers Law by Elner Kelton

This book contains three Texas Ranger novels in chronological order with the same charactors. Very good reading. If you are familiar with Elmer Kelton's Texas novels, this book will meet or exceed your expectations.

Ranger's Law

I love his character development. Having read about 10 or 12 of Kelton's books I can say he is, in my opinion, the best Western author ever. I love the story lines and the way he develops and stages the story. You rarely know how the story will develop and the surprise is nice.

The best western trilogy I've ever read in my entire life.

I read The Ranger's Law Trilogy before I went back and read The Lone star saga(the trilogy written first). This is the most well written and descriptive western I have ever read in my entire life and I believe that anyone who invests in this trilogy will have spent their money very wisely. The characters are great and after the first book in the series you'll want to read more and more about them.

Another great read from Elmer Kelton

Among the best character developers I've ever read, Kelton is a master in his discriptions. The stories lines are NOT predictable in a genre' that typically is. I will be reading more of his work.
