Ramrani Tarabai [Marathi]

Tarabai Bhonsle (1675-1761) was a significant figure in Maratha history, known for her strength and leadership during a critical period of the Maratha Empire. She was the daughter-in-law of the great Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji, having married his younger son, Rajaram Maharaj. After the death of her husband, Rajaram, Tarabai took on a pivotal role in leading the Marathas against the Mughal Empire.

As a regent for her son, Shivaji II, she ruled in his name and displayed remarkable political and military acumen. Under her leadership, the Marathas continued their guerrilla warfare tactics against the Mughals, which helped preserve the empire in the face of intense opposition. She also played an important role in maintaining unity within the Maratha faction at a time when internal rivalries could have weakened their position.

Tarabai was known for her boldness, intelligence, and dedication to the cause of Maratha sovereignty. She remained an influential figure throughout her life, even in her later years when she opposed the rising power of Peshwa Baji Rao I.

Her legacy is that of a resilient and strong leader, who fought against great odds to defend her people and kingdom.
