"Rajan" is the story of a youth who is learning how to be a man. It deals with issues of honor, inequality, and the value of life. Rajan, a farmer, is banished from his home after he kills a nobleman in what he calls "a duel between equals." He accepts the protection of a sorcerer, but the price for that protection is more than he is willing to pay.The tale is woven with inviting natural images. Tim Lukeman is a master at painting a picture for the reader of the beautiful scenery in which the story is set. Here is a sample from the beginning of chapter 6: "The waterfall thundered down from the ivy-mottled cliff to shatter in spray and froth on the worn, mossy stones below. The foaming water ran through bamboo and thick ferns until reaching the river, where it was lost in muddy shadows."If you enjoy a combination of magic, philosophy and the beauty of nature, I would highly recommend this book.
