This book is a series of vignettes in the life of a man, born in Jewish Harlem, detailing the love, the joys and the sorrows he encountered on a journey that began when his mother died in the Flu Epidemic of 1918 when he was 3 days old. The journey is, at times, poignant, humorous and sad, but through it all runs the thread of love exemplified by the Yiddish cradlesong of the title, sung by his Papa. The journey takes the reader through a childhood in Harlem and the Bronx, experiences in the army, through medical school and beyond. "Raisins and Almonds" was written at the request of his wife and children who wanted to know about his life before they came into it.
