I read this book in two days--could not put it down as the author's approach was original and eye-opening. I particularly liked the practical ideas that we could implement in our own home. As a result of reading it, our family's approach to media has undergone a paradigm shift which I believe will result in a much healthier use of TV, internet, cell phones, etc.
For Parents in the Media Age

Books about media and kids today are usually full of predictable statistics about the effects of violent and sexually explicit shows on kids. But this book is different. Dunlap goes beyond the obvious and takes a look at how the media is a message in itself. This was a unique approach and I thought he developed it in a very insightful way. The writing was clear and easy to follow. His point is that even if we set aside the question of what particular messages the media are conveying, we are still very much shaped and influenced by its fast-paced, image-based communication style, both as individuals and as families. He says that the media's influence on our ability to communicate and build meaningful relationships with others is a crucial element for parents to take into account when raising their children. Dunlap is a parent and an educator (as well as a former ABC and NBC media professional), and his goal is to show that parents must understand the communications media in order to be effective educators of their children. I think every parent with children, TV sets, and Internet connections should check out this book. It's not a "scare tactic" book; rather, it helps parents to get inside the issue and learn the manage the media in an intelligent and constructive way. All in all, a good investment for parents and anyone interested in the media's impact on our minds.
