Over the years I've been collecting memories and stories of six generations of our family. As I continue to go through and contemplate these episodes, I'm struck by how unique each family member is and by how that member's uniqueness continues to contribute to an ever growing and expanding family. Those contributions, as I see them now, take the form of numerous virtues, acted out through the simple task of living. These virtues form an identifiable foundation and serve as guiding principles to the unit we call family. They also serve to help us as individuals shape and form our own identities. The times we live in are troubling, but in a way, they have always been troubling. Yet more and more we find ourselves needing compasses: artifacts and tools which can give us guidance through times of trouble and times of fear as well as times of triumph and joy. The stories you will find within the pages of this book are meant to serve as a testament to the strength of cultivating a family and trying and failing and trying again to live out a faith through the tools of numerous virtues available to each of us.
