Raised "Old School" in an Old School is a book of favorite columns by former weekly columnist Loren Else of the Rochester (Minnesota) Post Bulletin newspaper. For ten years, he authored stories of remarkable baby boomers, Vietnam veterans, of growing up in the 1950s and 60s, the good old days, his hometown, and his old high school. The old school, built in 1901 with locally quarried sandstone and rebuilt after a fire in 1909, still stands, although dilapidated and vacant. There are uplifting stories of caring for grandchildren, parents and saying goodbye to the greatest generation. Else's former editor, Jeff Pieters, stated that Else's columns often bring a smile or a tear. Clearly, there is some magic in his work that inspires people. The author's upbringing in a patriotic home by a World War II veteran and a stay-at-home mom impacted his life and his writing. The author was a high school basketball official and worked in corrections for 36 years. Growing up, he and his family lived in Kansas, Alaska, and Alabama before settling in Sandstone, Minn. His family lived in Alaska when the territory became a state in 1959. The author currently lives in Rochester, Minn.
