Rains of Somber

The original version of Rains of Somber was made in 2008 with the purpose of capturing where I stood at that point in my life. I began writing in 1992 at the insistence of a great teacher, encouraged to put my thoughts down on paper. Poetry and prose ensued, and 15 years later I wrote enough that I felt the need to publish what I had for my friends and family. Looking back on the original work with eyes of experience and personal growth (both spiritually and emotionally), I see many flaws, some rough edges, and struggles with certain ideas. I also see an author that I can no longer recognize, an author without direction but holding a promise for a life that may or may not happen. The thought of revising some of the original pieces has occurred to me on several occasions. Grammatically and structurally, a few pieces were corrected or structurally changed for the needs of the new format. But the idea and emotions are still intact. I did not make any piece 'better' by smoothing the edges, polishing the ideas, and erasing emotional flaws. If I had done this I feel that I would be, in effect, changing a pivotal moment in my life. I would be erasing one of the few crossroads in my life, warts and all so to speak. And that cannot happen. To transition from a lone wolf, from one without care or regard to anything in this world, to a happily married man, with deep faith and with the promise of children was not easy. It was a struggle to get to the present, but it is not without its rewards. This book represents the lone wolf taking those early steps in 1992 and leading up to 2008, trusting only in his faith and the vision of a meaningful life. I have added several modern pieces that I felt belonged here for the simple reason that sometimes the lone wolf emerges from time to time, in thought if not in action. But the lone wolf is no longer alone. He has found his Creator, his soul mate, and his child. In the light of a mature life, he has found the road that so many have missed or ignore. And after a lifetime of struggle and battle, he has achieved a good measure of victory.Aaron Cornett 12.31.13
