Rainbow Reflections : An Interview with Bernice M. Dyck

Founded in McAlester, Oklahoma, in 1922, the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls "promotes community service, as well as love and service to their schools, their homes and to each other." (www.gocarainbow.org) In 1924, Rainbow was established in California with the institution of San Francisco Assembly #1. In 1937, Fresno, California, native Bernice M. (Denman) Dyck was initiated as a Rainbow Girl into Fresno Assembly #51. As an adult leader in the organization, Dyck assisted the local Rainbow assemblies and later held a position on the state level as a member of the Grand Executive Committee. In 1973, Dyck was selected as the new Supreme Deputy to oversee the California Rainbow jurisdiction. At the time of her retirement in 1980, California Rainbow had grown to the largest membership in the international organization. This book documents the history of the California Rainbow for Girls organization from its inception until the time Dyck retired as Supreme Deputy. In this oral history, Dyck reminisces about her childhood and shares recollections about family members who played a vital role in the history of Fresno County, California.
