In 2002, Steve, a 29 year old software engineer, travelled to Australia for a year after becoming jaded with London and office life - and before he got too old. He stays on Bondi beach, learns to fly above the Sydney suburbs, develops a website, gets a farming job on a cattle station as a jackeroo, dives the Great Barrier Reef, and finds himself driving 19 tonne trucks in preparation for a drilling job in the Western Australia desert. Finally, joined by a mate from London, he hires aircraft with a syndicate and embarks on a troublesome flying tour of the southwest corner of Australia before undertaking a 4,000 kilometre road-trip from Perth to Alice Springs. He enthusiastically follows the rugby league competition, gets a game, receives house-sharing offers from working girls and labours as a tree surgeon. Whilst he is there, he reflects on his adventures working in the IT industry overseas and as an Army Reserve paratrooper.
