This quick but brutal read recounts the growing pains of four prairie teenagers and their efforts to extricate themselves from their hicktown heritage. Anyone who grew up outside a major urban centre, was considered/felt themselves to be weird/f**ked-up/"different," and longed to escape to the city, will be able to relate. The dialogue is so adroit, it doesn't even seem like "dialogue," just the way people talk. Another plus is the strong dyke/bisexual theme running through the book.--Admittedly, I might be biased, 'cause I, like the author, am Mennonite! That said, though, RagTimeBone definitely stands on its own merits. But if you prefer your reading to be "cheerful" or "uplifting," steer clear of this one: it'll chill you to the bone. --And on the next page, get you all hot & bothered! And hey, at a discount price, how can you lose?
