Late in the 1st century, the Apostle John wrote to recover essential truth in danger of being lost in the church, a danger also today. John does not call for perfection. Yet he is intense and eager to help his young flock grow, acutely aware of societal landmines pulling believers away from radical followership. In his passion, John paints his picture with the sharp contrasts of blacks and whites, paradoxical tensions to expose spiritual counterfeits.When I read a book, I like to know why the author has written. John carefully gives us at least two reasons. First, that God's people experience ecstatic joy. This comes as we respond by faith to the invitation of God the Father and Son to share their life in relational koinonia, both with God and with one another (1:3-4). Second, that we might know by personal experience this unique quality of life called eternal life. This life comes only by faith in our Jesus, the Son of God. And it comes all the way from the Father into our hearts, restoring assurance of intimate, ongoing relationship with the Son of God for eternity (5:13).
