Standard Text for Local Politics

I used this for an honors course in state and local politics. The book is a collection of very in-depth articles discussing the interactions between race, ethnicity, and city-level politics. The articles discuss several major US cities including Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, and Baltimore. Each article has a historical discussion of that city's mayoral politics from around 1950 to about 2000. This is followed by theory and generalizations attempting to explain phenomena like interracial coalitions, racial factors in mayoral elections, and reasons for a particular regime's success or failure. There last couple articles discuss the future of interracial coalitions and future strategies for minority populations to retain political influence. The book is very in-depth and I did not find it necessary to read all the history/anecdotes to succeed in my class. I focused more on the sections about the theoretical aspects of racial politics, backed up by the occasional example.

Excellent collection of original articles on city politics

This book provides an overview of racial politics in U.S. cities and detailed studies of New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and other cities by leading experts. Well-edited and well-written, I highly recommend this book.
