My inspiration for "Raccoons in the Corn" comes from a couple of country gardener friends who are serious defenders of their sweet corn crops. Any sweet corn grower knows that raccoons love the stuff. The ornery critters wait until the crop is perfectly ripe and strike with military precision. No stalk is left unturned. In the wake of their attack will inevitably be the frustrated gardener, licking his lips over what might have been the best crop ever. My story features Farmer Baldridge, his feisty wife, and a family of resourceful ring-tailed robbers. The story begins with Farmer B. scanning seed catalogs to plan his spring corn planting. Details of the planting and defensive strategies help build suspense. Will the electric fence be an effective deterrent? Are motion lights sufficiently scary? Will Mrs. Baldridge put up with another season of corn mania? How will Farmer B. cope if all his best laid plans fail?
