Quokka Out of Water: The Daintree Chronicles

The saltwater didn't belong in his lungs.
A final, thunderous wave slammed the splintered remains of the Western Australian cargo vessel into the jagged reef, throwing a tiny ball of sodden fur into the churning foam. Plucked from his peaceful home on Rottnest Island by the cruel hands of human commerce, the young quokka had spent weeks trapped in a dark, clanking cargo hold. Now, the ocean was spitting him out.
Pepper tumbled through the surf, his tiny claws scraping uselessly against the shifting sands. He gasps for air, coughing up brine as the black water receded.
He was alive. But he was entirely alone.
Above him, the canopy didn't look like the low, scrubby banks of the west. Massive, prehistoric fan palms towered into the stormy sky like giant, emerald hands. The air was thick, heavy, and dripping with an oppressive tropical humidity that smelled of crushed ferns, ancient earth, and rotting mangrove roots. This was the mouth of the Daintree River-a place of apex predators and unforgiving terrain.
A low, vibrating hum echoed from the shadows of the mangroves. The young quokka froze, his large ears twitching. Out here, everything was a threat.
From the darkness of the treeline, a group of tall figures emerged. They moved with absolute silence, their eyes tracking the unusual tracks in the sand. The Kuku Yalanji men stopped, their spears lowered as they looked down at the shivering, sea-soaked creature.
Pepper didn't run. He couldn't. Instead, he lifted his small head, looked the lead tracker in the eyes, and bared his teeth in a trembling, instinctual quokka smile.
The elder smiled back. A deep, resonant chuckle broke the sound of the crashing waves.
"Well, look at you," the elder murmured, kneeling into the wet sand and gently scooping the orphan into his warm, calloused hands. "A long way from home, little warrior. Let's get you out of the cold."

"A long way from home, but right where he belongs."
