Resilience and perseverance were never abstract ideas for me. They were survival skills. As an underestimated kid, I felt that so many people - teachers, mentors, program heads, administrators-prejudged me based on who they thought I was, how I presented myself, and my background that I had to fight to get to the level that I'm at now. Underestimated can happen in many ways. For me, sometimes people made a judgment based on the way I looked, my cultural or ethnic background. Other times, people have made judgments based on my age and perceived lack of experience. And then some have made judgments about me based on my background and developmental history. This short book chronicles my journey on the path to becoming a physician and a surgeon.
