On Maryland's western shore, a young boy watches a pair of eagles nesting in a stand of oak trees near his school. When the land where the trees are growing is sold to a company that plans to build condominiums there, the boy wonders what will happen to the eagles. Eventually, he and his classmates become worried enough to do something to help the nesting pair. Students, teachers, parents, and people from the local business community all join forces to ensure that the eagles can keep their nesting site. The story is appealing for its look at the remarkable bird that is America's national emblem. At the same time, children are encouraged to learn their voice can be heard Middle grades-ages 8-12.
Carolyn Stearns' Quiet Please - Eaglets Growing is an uplifting picturebook story about John-B, a young boy who watches a pair of eagles nesting in oak trees. When the property with the eagles' nest is sold to a company that wants to build condominiums, the boy and his classmates must come up with a plan to save the eagles' nest site before it is too late. Quiet Please - Eaglets Growing is an absorbing tale for young people whose reading comprehension skills have grown to where they are just about ready to make the transition from picture books to more involved faire. Sketchy yet memorable color illustrations by David Aiken nicely enhance this heartwarming tale for young readers.

Quiet Please - Eaglets Growing is truly inspiring and a wonderful example for children. With beautiful illustrations by David Aiken, Carolyn Stearns tells the true story of how one person can make a difference ---in this case one young boy. John-B was so inspired by the graceful eagles, his observations lead a school and community on a campaign to save these magnificent birds. I found this book to be an inspiration for children (both young and old) to realize one person can make a difference.

John-B knows he is lucky, because he lives on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay where there many wonderful things in his natural world, especially a stand of old oak trees in which a pair of Bald Eagles nest & raise their young, each spring. This year, however, John-B's teacher tells her fifth grade students that the land has been sold to a development company, which is going to cut down those beautiful oak trees, & build a condominium. The children decide they have to do something to save these amazing birds' home, they write letters & invite everyone to come watch the eaglets in their nest. With attractive illustrations by David Aiken, Carolyn Stearns has written a charming, informative story of how people can make a difference in the world in which they live.
