Book Overview

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

A marvelous novel about love and exile.

Pablo Casals, admired throughout the world for his humanitarian and political commitment, promised he would never set foot in his country as long as Franco was alive. However, in the winter of 1955, for the first and only time since he left for exile, he went back to Catalonia. Why did he do it? What powerful reason could have made him break his promise?

Dear Pablo tries to answer that question.

In this novel, Mar?a Ja?n revives the figure of Francesca Vidal, often ignored or underestimated in the musician's biographies. Through an emotionally charged narrative, the author gives Vidal back her long-silenced voice and vindicates her pivotal role beside Pau Casals.

"I write, dear Pablo, because there are things best said in silence and all at once, without the other one listening or interrupting. Writing to you is easier than saying out loud what I wish to tell you. I want it written that, at death's door--yes, at death's door, because no matter what the doctor says, I know I have very little time before I leave for the other side--and at death's door, well, in this pitiful exile, I have decided to rebel."
