Breaking news from space! The bad: An intrepid captain and his men have landed on a planet where males are outlawed. The good: Some women there are eager to break the law! Queen of Outer Space is a milestone of movie camp. Eric Fleming plays the granite-jawed leader who shares with his crew the crime of maleness. That's just the start of their troubles. The man-hating Venusian Queen (Laurie Mitchell) aims to destroy Earth once a Beta Disintegrator is operational. But a gossamer-gowned scientist (Zsa Zsa Gabor) and her curvy cohorts eye the men, and they like what they see. This bijou bauble has sets, costumes and effects from Flight to Mars, Forbidden Planet and World Without End. Have fun spotting them. Botchino!
Before even starting this movie, we knew it was a classic based on its reputation. And we surely remember Zsa Zsa Gabor from “Boys' Night Out” (1962).
As the titles roll, we look at all the names, and only a few ring a bell as to where we saw them before. However, it does not take long before you see all your old Sci-Fi character actors, and maybe a cowboy (Eric Fleming) or two, appear on the screen.
The space suits are reminiscent of “Forbidden Planet,” and one girl wears a dress from the movie. Some of the space shots were stock footage from “World Without End.”
We can already guess the story before it ever starts; it is sort of a later spoof of “Cat Women on the Moon.” And it will have you saying, “Here, kitty, kitty.”
Will the spacemen survive their ordeal and return to tell about it?
Cinemascope and color.
Be sure to watch the extras on the DVD, as it adds insight.
