What is autism?: Reflections from the Neurodiversity Paradigm

Neurodiversity can be understood from three perspectives: as a biological reality, as a paradigm, and as a movement. As a paradigm, it asserts that there is no single "normal" type of brain, and that each variation contributes to human biodiversity and creativity. In this book, Ernesto Reaño, a psychologist and individual on the autism spectrum, reflects on his work through the lens of neurodiversity. Various topics are explored, including the origins of autism, diagnosis, neurodiversity, myths and purported cures, the role of caregivers, sexuality, adult life, electronality, trauma, autistic identity, and others. Autism is a lifelong condition associated with atypical neurodevelopment (neurotype). It is not a disease or disorder. Autistic individuals process the world differently in terms of cognition, emotion, and sensory perception. They often possess skills and talents in areas of their deep interest. Their challenges lie in understanding typical social mechanisms. Being autistic is akin to belonging to a different culture, one where alternative ways of thinking, feeling, and expressing affection challenge and broaden our understanding of what it means to be human. It emphasizes diversity that mirrors our own, promoting neurodiversity. The book features a prologue and epilogue written by two autistic activists and thinkers: Autiblog and Alba Román. The cover art was designed by autistic artist Alejandra Aceves.
