Ryan Cunningham, husband of June and father of Dr Annette Cunningham, the NASA astronaut, has an overwhelming obligation to pay back to society the pollution his lifetime as a fighter pilot created. The death and destruction he caused in Senegal defeating an invasion left him with fits of depression. He resigns from the Royal Air Force and focuses on developing a hydrogen-powered transportation device he calls his Zerolifter. Rich Cumberland, his engineer from the African campaign, joins Ryan and the go through successes and challenges, including a patent violation threat and a burgeoning anti-hydrogen movement. Corin and Annalise become the hydrogen-powered devices spokespersons, spreading influence over their generation, concerned not only for themselves but also for their children on a warming earth with no tangible progress in reducing fossil fuel emissions.
