When the author began working with activity directors of people in managed care, she was impressed by the good cheer and positive spirit of the residents. Though the clients were mainly seniors, many with health problems, most of them shared one trait: They never lost their sense of fun. While crafts showed off their skills and word games challenged their memories, many especially loved the opportunity to be in the spotlight by reading skits. Vetter writes skits that give all clients a chance to shine. Whether seated at a table reading the script, or if able, standing and performing the lines from memory, each performer is allowed time in the spotlight. She keeps her skits short, using uncomplicated language to allow all members of a group to participate. To help evoke fond memories, she often sets her scenes and chooses topics from a time when mature clients were at their most active. For simplicity's sake, the skits do not require costumes or scenery and ask for very few props. Activity directors are encouraged, however, to elaborate as they see fit. The main requirement, and the guarantee for success, is the imagination of the players.
