When to Keep a Secret

In this book of the Yellow Rose Mystery series, Abby is asked to help identify an accident victim. The police had found a business card for Yellow Rose Investigations in the the wrecked car. This begins a case in which Abby finally finds the truth but it is a secret that she can't tell. A new love interest for Abby's twin Kate? I love this series. It is excellently written.

awesome and refreshing

Sweeney's protagonist Abby Rose is the last person one would consider a professional private detective - raised in the Texas blue blood society, she seemed like the typical rich debutante. But Abby had a wake up call when she was suspected of murder and discovered that she and her twin sister were adopted long ago. Discovering her passion, Abby now has her PI license and cases to use as references to testify to her success. But not all adoptees like what they find... When Abby gets a call from a Texas Sheriff asking for her help in identifying a crash victim, she nearly panics. But upon clarification, the victim was found in a car wreck with only Abby's business card to help the police in identification - even the information on the car is bogus. Reluctantly, Abby heads to the hospital where the patient is comatose and attempts to dredge up memories of the battered, bruised, and swollen face to assist the new sheriff Cooper Boyd, formerly of the FBI. Bewildered, Abby agrees to assist the sheriff in finding some answers to the girl's identity by searching her records, which slowly draws her into a deadly maze of Texas bluebonnets since forensics has shown that the crash was attempted murder. Abby brings in the usual suspects to assist her on her case: her sister Kate the psychologist, her boyfriend Jeff (the police detective) and his sister Doris, Jeff's former partner DeShay, and most importantly Diva the cat. All of them are with Abby, helping her with her learning curve into the world of adoption and investigation. When Abby starts making paths into the history of a well-known wealthy Texas family, the colloquialisms start piling up like bales of hay. But Abby doesn't give up, despite the possibility of the needle in the haystack being poisoned... I love this series. Each one is something new to the mystery scene, with such a unique detective who is not afraid to make mistakes or ask for help in order to find what needs to be done. I think the adoption angle is awesome and refreshing. The southern expressions will have you laughing out loud - regularly - while you wonder how in the world people actually put them together. Keep an eye out for Sweeney's new Cats in Trouble series next year.

Another great adoption cozy mystery

Abby Rose, owner of Yellow Rose Investigations, is an adoption private investigator in Texas. Abby is asked by Cooper Boyd, Chief of Police in Pineview, to help identify a woman in a coma. She was the victim of an automobile accident that doesn't appear to have been an accident. One of Abby's business cards was found in the car. Unfortunately the woman is so bruised and battered that it is difficult for an identification. Abby decides to compare the handwriting on the back of the business card to all the correspondence she's received in her business. Her Aunt Caroline offers to help. Soon it is discovered that Aunt Caroline is quite ill. Abby and Aunt Caroline find the letter, but it doesn't help them find out who wanted the victim dead. Instead Abby is hired by the wealthy grandfather of the woman to uncover her past. She finds an entire family of people with reasons for wanting her out of the picture. Kate, Abby's twin sister, helps with the investigation. Jeff, Abby's boyfriend and a local detective, helps her some as well. Can she find the killer without putting herself or this woman in further jeopardy? I really enjoy this series. Kate and Abby are such likeable characters. I like the fact that Abby is an adoption private investigator. It provides such interesting storylines to the series. I also like how Jeff tries to protect Abby, but doesn't smother her. I especially enjoy the Texas setting. That's a place I've always wanted to visit, so I enjoy getting to know it through the series. This is a great cozy mystery series, and I can't wait for the next installment. I highly recommend this book! Give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed!

Ms. Sweeney's Yellow Roses Are in Full Bloom!

Pushing Up Bluebonnets is the fifth in Leann Sweeney's enjoyable Yellow Rose Mystery series. The story starts off with a bang, when Abby Rose, owner of Yellow Rose Investigations and adoption investigator extraordinaire, is asked by Chief of Pineview PD, Cooper Boyd, to try to identify a woman who is lying in a coma in the Ben Taub Neurologic ICU, the victim of an automobile accident that was NO accident. The only item in the car with the victim was one of Abby's Yellow Rose business cards. Abby accompanies Chief Boyd to visit the patient, but her bruised, battered, and swollen appearance makes any meaningful identification all but impossible. Undaunted and without an actual client to pay her, Abby decides to use the handwriting on the back of the business card to help identify the victim (just one of the reasons we love her!). So Abby, with the help of her irascible (and, as it turns out, quite ill) Aunt Caroline, takes on the huge task of going through all of the correspondence ever received by Yellow Rose Investigations. When Abby hits pay dirt, she expects things to fall easily into place to allow Chief Boyd to find out who wanted the victim out of the picture, but what Abby actually learns is that not everything is what it seems. And when Abby is hired by the victim's wealthy grandfather to uncover her past, she finds a whole lot more than she bargained for - including an entire family full of people who wouldn't mind if the victim was removed from the picture, permanently. Yikes! Abby is surrounded by her usual likable supporting cast of characters, including her twin sister slash psychologist, Kate, and significant other slash homicide detective, Jeff - both of whom find their way into the fray. Jeff is protective but not domineering, and is a wonderful brother to Doris, his sister with Down Syndrome. Kate is coming off a very bad relationship and assisting Abby helps move her in a positive direction. I have the feeling we AND Kate will be seeing more of Cooper Boyd! The storyline allows Abby to flex her investigative muscles while trusting family and friends to keep her out of harm's way. She encounters plenty of suspicious and nefarious characters, but just exactly how many of them are bent on murder? Abby has to use all of her abilities - and those of everyone she knows - to catch a killer and help a young woman find peace and a place to belong. Wonderful job, Ms. Sweeney!

Another Great Yellow Rose Mystery

Abby Rose takes on another job that the reader can't figure out till the end of the book. Her returning characters are great and there's always a new one that will probably return in a future book. There's not enough of her boyfriend Jeff in this one but he's still around. Her sister Kate is helpful as always. Abby finds herself in trouble (as usual) but it's always a believeable escape. Hope Sweeney continues her Yellow Rose series.
