Decades before 18-year-old Sean was born, a local cop dubbed the blocks that surround the O'Malley residence as a microcosm of Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen. Eventually, the name Purgatory's Kitchen stuck. The story opens up in September on a warm, late summer night. While the O'Malley clan sleeps, Sean slips out into the darkness with his granddad's iron crowbar and smashes windshields in order to save the family from eviction. Pa lost his job recently at the factory and Ma scrubs other people's floors. Sean has a dilemma, a secret he has not revealed to his parents, he is also about to be laid off by Shorty O'Hara at the glass repair shop. Hence, Sean is attempting to save his job by going on a one-man rampage to create business for Shorty O'Hara. His impetuous decision will set the stage for new troubles where the iron crowbar will eventually be confiscated as a weapon used in a gruesome murder.
