In 1897, J. Gordon Coogler published a single volume containing his original poems, combining five previous volumes into one. His poetic efforts had garnered more than one interesting review and Coogler included them in this combined volume of Purely Original Verse. An astute reader will find the reviews to often be as interesting as the poetry itself. Even those who do not like poetry find Coogler's work gentle, heartfelt, and truly personal. Unfortunately, one hundred years later, Coogler's work had come to represent a genre of truly original - and truly bad - poetry. To Coogler's fans, however, those opinions show only a lack of sensitivity and appreciation for "Southern poetry". The original four by five and three-quarter inch book has been completely re-typed into a modern, easy-to-read format while preserving the original style of the self- published book.
