Throughout the years, American public schools have been shown, in survey after survey, to be inferior and possibly vastly inferior, to those of other nations. In this fascinating book, author and associate-professor of Education, Dr. Frank Nelson, examines American public education from an Evangelical perspective. In Part I he presents a history of American public education, in Part II, he looks at humanism as taught therein, in Part III he looks at the values taught in American public schools, and in Part IV he looks at what can be done. Overall, I found this to be a very interesting read. I was very interested to see how public education developed, with various controversies stirring the education pot from its very inception. I found the author's analysis to be very penetrating, providing a good deal of enlightenment on the subject without become boring. Now, with this book being twenty years old, you would probably expect it to be out-of-date. But, on the contrary, I found that what Dr. Nelson had to say was very relevant and still quite on-target. Perhaps the No Child Left Behind initiative is not addressed, but nonetheless the reigning philosophy is still the same as it was twenty years ago. I found this to be a very enlightening and thought-provoking book, and I do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone interested in American public education.
