The seventh volume in David Benner's Psychology and Christianity Series, editor Everett Worthington's collection of articles is aimed at lay counselors, pastors who disciple lay counselors, counseling pastors, therapists and researchers. Some chapters are heavy with data, others are more reflective in nature. Rather than teaching how to counsel, the book's intent is to equip those who counsel with information to better enable them to deal with religious issues in the counseling context. Worthington et al tackle such issues as religious values in secular theories of psychology, boundary areas of religious clients' values, and the use of forgiveness in the clinical setting. Particularly noteworthy is the final chapter, "Psychology and the Christian Faith: 20th and 21st Century," which grapples with material and philosophical trends and how those factors play out in terms of the world view of those we counsel.
