Shuford Jones has brought the Psalms into the hearts of those who, like David the king of Israel, long for a deeper relationship with God. In this book he explains the Messianic scriptures that Christ applied to His own life, and he explains the prophecies of David and the Old Testament and how they are related. In fact, his recent book "The Revelation of St. John Explained," an excellent commentary contemporary with this book is available at Amazon.com. This first volume in a three volume series covers the life and times of David, the composers and musicians under David, a general overview of some of the unique organization of the Psalms, and commentary and a devotional guide to Psalms 1-50. David faced some tragic and dark times including the deaths of four of his children, his sinful relationship with the wife of one of his military persons, the attempted coup organized by one of his sons including thousands of David's own military and close associates and other defectors, and his enemies both internal within Israel and external from other nations operating with overwhelming military forces. It was not unusual for David to be attacked by tens of thousands of fighters from other nations. As king, he was commander-in-chief of the military, and in that role, he led the army in all wars. Part of the darkness in David's life resulted from the previously mentioned overwhelming odds he faced, and the wounds inflicted upon David. One of these wounds just could not be healed, and the infection kept even his close family members far from him creating a terrible sense of loneliness. In such time he sought and received the love and help of the Lord God. But David also came to live in the light of God's presence and God's face as he referred to in his writings. He discovered how to engage the Lord in his own situation, and thereby, he became an ardent supporter of his own people who, like him, experienced dark times. His music became the hymns of worship. His psalms written in beautiful poetry became the hymns that the nation would eventually sing in the temple. He discovered and trained hundreds of musicians and "singers." and he not only wrote the psalms but enlisted other gifted composers. These we explain and identify in this book. His hymns are sung in Christian churches around the world, as well as in Judaism. David was also a prophet as attested to by the New Testament. Some of his prophecies explain the love, redemption, and care of God for His people, as well as God's wrath and punishment that David explained would fall upon people who chose to be enemies of God. The Psalms point us to a day when the nations will eventually come to worship God and His Son Jesus, the Messiah. In this book we have reprinted and preserved the beauty of the King James version, but adapted it to easy modern understanding in a version called Easy King James Version (Copyright). You do not need to be a scholar to understand this series. The writer has taught pastors and groups of people for decades in a clear and basic understanding of the scriptures. It is his concept that people should read his books and be able to explain the scriptures to others. The Bible is for all people and God intended for us to understand it and apply it in our daily lives. This book approaches life as God intended it, and that is to be lived within His care and love and salvation.
