Only the Lord knows of the hour of His return, when He shall claim His elect and the last, great battle between Heaven and Hell shall commence. In an effort to delay the event and build his army to be mightier than God's, Satan conspires to trick a virtuous, innocent mortal into willingly crossing the threshold into hell. When the devout Catholic, Grace Quinn, unwittingly falls prey to his trap, the Archangels Michael and Rafael must recruit Saint Joan of Arc and Saint Patrick, along with Grace's Jewish boyfriend, Ben Marcus, to journey into hell to rescue her.

Their travels take the small party through the various levels of the remorseful, repentant sinners awaiting judgment, into the very realm of the most evil lord of darkness.
