Nearly a decade ago, I enlisted in the military to escape the horrors of my family. My older brother was an addict and my parents are unable to stop him from using. They tried, but after numerous failed attempts, they gave up on him. I had to choose myself.

The only bright spot from home was her. Maren, the girl next door who also happened to be my brother's best friend and way too old for me. I pined from afar knowing I would never break bro code. Four years ago my brother succumbed to his demons and I was unable to mourn him in person.
