From the back cover: Christmas--A time for Giving...and Love. In the small town of Lockwood, Ohio, Amanda Wynne harbored special hopes for this first Christmas after the Civil War. Yet so much had changed. Her husband, Matt, had returned a broken man and would soon be lost forever. And while she took two war widows into her crumbling mansion, Amanda's heart felt as bleak as the dreary winter...until, at the newly declared holiday of Thanksgiving, three visitors appeared at her door. A former slave, whom Amanda had once helped on the Underground Railway, arrived with her daughter and with a desperate plea for help. Then Lincoln Garner came, a homeless Southern soldier running away from something, searching for something. Soon they were banding together like a family, giving and sharing, through harship and dangers. And when the miracle of love and desire broke through all barriers to unite Amanda and Lincoln, they knew they were home...and it was Christmas...and everything was posssible for those who dared to dream... And my review: I really enjoyed this book. It was the first thing I read by Karen Harper, but I was glad I took the chance. It was nice to read an epic civil war story whose heroine was from the North, and not the South. And she was a woman you could cheer for, not a spoiled brat like Scarlett O'Hara. (Not that I'm knocking Gone With the Wind, mind you. I've read and kept that book.) This story was clean, no sex, so you could let your teenage daughter read it. There were a few mild references to sex in the book, but nothing explicit. It's well written, and well researched. I've re-read this book about three times, it's so enjoyable. The only complaint I had with it was that Amanda and Lincoln were seperated for much of the middle of the book, which is kind of annoying in a romance, since you want to see the interaction between the characters. Still, it was well worth the money, and not a book I'll ever get rid of!
