I have been working with multimedia and DirectShow for quite a while now and I must say that I wish this book was around when I started. Although much of the contents of the book is found in the SDK documentation I think the same can be said of any book on any Microsoft topic. The book is definitely organized in a clearer manner and provides examples where the SDK documentation lacks them. A few interesting points about the book is its discussion of DirectShow programming with the .NET Framework which will be handy especially in the future when Microsoft fully upgrades DirectShow to work with the Framework. The book also contains a section on the Windows Media PlayList filter and Windows Media Profiles which as far as I can recall are not covered in the DirectShow SDK. Finally, the neatest part of the book is that it concentrates on the more frequently used features of DirectShow so that you can familiarize yourself with much of the API in a suprisingly short amount of time.
good DirectShow coverage

The book gives really good coverage of DirectShow. It includes the following topics:playbackcompressioncaptureProgramming DirectShow with .NETWindows Media FormatWindows Media Player FiltersThe playback and capture sections are excellent and will get you going in creating playback and capture applications in no time. The book concentrates on Playback and Compression which is what most people out there will be interested in. Appropriately, it only introduces the fundamentals of filter structure and step-by-step programming which will be needed by the comparatively few people who are writing custom multimedia components and have a solid knowledge of media formats etc.If you would like to include multimedia into your application and have a solid knowledge of COM programming this book should be easy to understand. Otherwise a COM primer would be a pre-requisite

This is a very valuable book for anyone who wants to program multimedia in his/her applications.A solid recommend!

This is an awesome book. It teaches how to create DVD and CD players and how to work with Multimedia. It is a bit on the advanced side and assumes you are familiar with COM.

Programming Microsoft DirectShow is the only book on the market that covers the subject and it does so quite well. I am amazed at the technology and the power it provides in creating multimedia applications. The author does a really good job in explaining DirectShow concepts and demonstrating them
