SOAP is the basis for new technologies driving interoperable distributed applications. To understand these new applications called Web Services you need to have a good understanding of how to programme using SOAP. It goes through the protocol semantics, how it compares to technologies of the old (CORBA, RMI), how to get max performance out of your system and much more.
