Problems in Literary Research is "a reference guide that teaches," offering students of literature and library science a clear and pedagogically effective presentation of 36 of the most useful works for the study of English and American literature. The fourth edition not only describes new editions of such tools as The Oxford Companion to English Literature, The OED, and Balay's Guide to Reference Books but adds new entries for Film and Literature Index, Makaryk's Encyclopedia of Contemporary Literary Theory, and Thompson's Key Sources in Comparative and World Literature. Updated material includes a new section on world literature as well as children's literature, film and television, literary theory, rhetoric, composition, technical writing, and writing across the curriculum.
Each of the 36 reference tools is described in detail, followed by a collection of review questions and, a series of reference problems, giving readers the opportunity to use the knowledge they have gained in a practical, "real world" situation. Three General Review sections offer 150 additional library research problems that challenge readers to find specific information from among the 36 reference tools detailed in the text. The Instructor's Index and Solutions to the Research Problems, provided upon request with the text, includes answers to all of the research problems. Also included in the text is brief information about 180 additional reference resources.
