Prison of Dreams

By Rajuan Ahmed

"Prison of Dreams" by Rajuan Ahmed is a poignant, gripping narrative that explores the harsh realities of migrant labor under the Kafala system. Driven by poverty, debt, and the hope of building a better future for his family, Rahim Mia leaves his village in Bangladesh for Dubai. However, his golden dreams quickly crumble upon arrival. Stripped of his passport and basic rights, he is thrust into grueling labor on construction sites under blistering heat, enduring unpaid wages, dangerous conditions, and squalid living quarters. When Rahim and his fellow workers dare to demand their earned pay, the system turns against them, criminalizing their struggle and leading to his wrongful imprisonment and deportation. Through Rahim's devastating journey, Ahmed exposes the profound human cost behind the glittering facades of modern metropolises. It is a powerful story of sacrifice, exploitation, invisible chains, and the unbreakable resilience of the human spirit amidst deep injustice.
