Book Overview

As in past editions, the basic philosophy of this extremely popular text is to present the principles and techniques of gene manipulation in sufficient detail to enable the non-specialist to understand them. However, in the three years since the previous edition, molecular biology has seen a dramatic increase in available techniques and applications. Every chapter in this new edition has been extensively revised or rewritten to take these developments into account - including a vastly expanded section on the polymerase chain reaction and its manifold applications, a new chapter examining the impact of recombinant DNA techniques on our understanding of human genetics, and extended coverage of gene transfer techniques.

Classic

This certainly isn't up to date, but for someone looking to explore and understand the basics of molecular biology and understand a bit of the history, this is a great book. It is very understandable, yet it goes into much more depth than newer books of similar topics. For a good foundation in molecular biology, this is a good place to start.

Absolutely Terrific

This text is just really great. The choice of words that go into the explanations are top notch. This was the requred textbook in my recombinant DNA course. It is written by biologists for biologists; very technical very exact; again just absolutely terrific for both review and in depth understanding. The only downfall I would say is that the Index isn't as good as it could be, but other than that I think every biology graduate student should own it....yeah its that good IMHO.

Pretty good content, although sometimes not well written

A very good book under the point of view of the content. A student facing the field for the first time will enjoy the "historical" overview given in the first half of the book, whereas those with more experience will still appreciate the description of the latest technologies. However, the book has been written by several "hands" and could have used better editing: there are way too many repetitions and redundancies. Syntax-wise, sometimes the odd sentence is pretty obscure, too.

great text book to study cloning and genetic engineering

i am doing Ph.D. in molecular biology and this book is very useful in the cloning and genetic engineering portion. i read this book from the library. it is the bible of genetic engineering and great text book for the subject.it gives a comprehensive study with minute details and recent advances. overall worth purchasing.
