While Mass Transfer Operations is a required course in every undergraduate chemical engineering program in the world, there does not exist a comprehensive text on the subject that is specifically tailored to the undergraduate reader. Principles and Modern Applications of Mass Transfer Operations responds to this need, providing a thorough, accessible text that presents the latest advances in the science as well as sets of targeted questions that challenge students' knowledge. The focus throughout Jaime Benitez's peerless study is on making the student consider computation from the start of a mass transfer dilemma. Twenty-five to thirty problems at the end of each chapter ensure that readers will remain actively engaged with the material. Principles incorporates examples of computational software such as Mathcad 2001, Matlab?, Mathematica, and Aspen Graphics, and also includes an ftp site that offers problems for each of these software applications as well as a Solutions Manual. Chapters encompass: -Fundamentals of mass transfer -Convective mass transfer -Interphase mass transfer -Equipment for gas-liquid mass transfer operations -Absorption and stripping -Distillation -Liquid-liquid extraction Ideal for a first course in mass transfer operations, this text will also prove valuable to chemical and environmental engineers, researchers, and university faculty.
This book is amazing! The way the author presents the theory, formulas and applications followed by an example is an effective way to understand the material. Another good thing about the book is that at the start of every section there are objectives which gives you a scope of what are the themes that you must learn. This book is very practical, specially in chapters of absorption, desorption (packed, sieve tray) and distillation columns. What makes this book an amazing one is the integration of the mass transfer phenomena with the mathetical computer program, MathCAD to solve tedious problems. The author presents MathCAD routines in the chapters and also in some of the appendixes. All you have to do is copy those routines and you are instantly solving problems. This is very useful in the design of separation columns (chapters 4 - 6) and when calculating diffusion coefficients (chapter 1). This book is as great as its author, believe me I took some courses with him, unfortunetly I couldn't take mass transfer with him. =(
Excellent mass transfer book

If your program splits transport phenomena into separate fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer classes, this would be an excellent text for the mass transfer class. The author does an excellent job of explaning the diference between mass transfer coefficients and diffusion coefficients compared to the generic tranport phenomena texts. He also integrates some of the recent developments in the literature into his treatise on mass transfer. Finally and the most interesting aspect of the book is the integration of a computer algebra system, specifically Mathcad into the problem solving process. Overall an excellent text.
A very didactic approach to mass-transfer operations.

The author of this book takes a very effective approach to introduce the reader to the complexities of mass-transfer operations design. From the very beginning of the book, the author guides the reader into a hands-on approach to calculations using MathCad programs to simplify tedious calculations that are usually a roadblock to the learning process. To make it even more convenient, an ftp site is available (see the Wiley.com page for the book) from which you can download the MathCad example programs and the Solutions Manual. I think that this book will soon become the standard textbook for mass-transfer operations.
